So cute! I was actually considering a herman's today but trying to slow down the pets coming in. You got a lucky hubby.:)
Re: harvey! (herman's tortoise)
He's AWEsome!! How big will he get?
My hubby would kill me if I got him a live pet as a gift....but it sure is tempting when I see little gems like that! LOL
Re: harvey! (herman's tortoise)
he will grow to be up to 10 inches long. much more manageable than some of the other popular torts like leopards and sulcatas, but just as much personality!
this spring when it starts to warm up we are going to build a tortoise garden in our backyard. this will consist of a small brick wall to keep him in (just a few bricks high), some kind of house for shelter, a small tub for bathing/drinking and a variety of weeds, wildflowers and grasses for him to munch on to his little heart's content. :P i've already started the indoor version of the garden--i got some long planters and planted them with dandelion, clover, every kind of wildflower seed i could get my hands on, mustard greens and collard greens. i can't wait until spring when we get to do the real thing! :sunny:

AGH! He's a DOLL! Love that 2nd pic!!! :sunny:
Re: harvey! (herman's tortoise)
They can scale rough surfaces higher than a few bricks. Be careful also that other animals such as dogs can't access the pen. We are putting in a raised bed in the backyard for ours made from timbers about 2 1/2 feet high lined with smooth boards. Also you want to have a below surface barrier or the walls at a deeper depth. Torts can dig good. We are having a decorative grate made for the top to keep the dogs out.
Re: harvey! (herman's tortoise)
i've read that something like 2 bricks underground and 4-5 bricks above ground will make a good enclosure--does that sound high/low enough? our backyard is already fenced (standard privacy fence type deal) so dogs and other animals can't get in--although i'm thinking a cat probably could if it wanted to....hmm.
