Didn`t expect to feed

Hi everyone,

My 2 year old BP went off feed since Nov and I`ve been keeping 3 live mice since.
Last night, during routine feeding and cleaning, I found one mouse had managed to escape and it was roaming around the herp room.
I caught it and was surprised to find a small portion of the lid of the mice enclosure chewed and two other mice were missing and still MIA.
- haven`t told my wife about it otherwise she`ll be sleeping at her parents until I find them.

I found 5 pinkies in the enclosure, must be a day old and they were so cute but I was in a dilemma since I didn`t have anything to temporarily seal the lid then so I had to either put mom and babies in a very small plastic enclosure which I use to transport them from the pet store or let mom roam free.
( BTW, it was around 11pm ).

I decided that neither were good options, and how could I be sure that the 1 mouse left is the mother anyway. So I decided to try feed my BP that night and tought of raising the pinkies but obviously that was not going to be possible. I came to a conclusion that if my BP does feed, then I`ll offer her the pinkies as well.

As fate would have it, my BP decided to resume feeding that night and ate
the mouse. After few minutes, I put 1 pinky in the snake enclosure and my BP was interested but confused. It was flicking it`s tongue at the pinky but didn`t strike. I had a feeling that she will eventually take it so I placed the remaining 4 in the enclosure and left them there for the night.
Sure enough, the next morning they were all gone.

I`m glad she resumed feeding but at the same time sad for the little ones and I still haven`t told my wife about the 2 MIAs.

Wow now thats a crazy night! Missing mice, more mice than you started with, then no mice to speak of. Your house sounds like a zoo! Luckly feeder mice are not quite as fast or smart as the wild ones. I found two escapies in a bag of substrate in the closet once. Don't think like a mouse, think like a very lost and slow, lazy mouse. they are probably in the room still. Maybe try some cheese on a plate to lure them out??

Yes, feeder rats/mice are a lot more mellow than their wild counterparts but I still haven`t found the missing mice yet and I just hope they don`t start a colony in my house.. YIKES!!

Good luck on finding the other two - do you have a cat or dog? Might be helpful in finding the wayward rodents.

I have 2 cats but no luck so far. My cats are afraid of rats but not really sure how they`ll react to mice tho, guess I`ll just have to wait and see.

I'm going to have to say I agree with your decision not to tell your wife. Personally, I am deathly afraid of mice...can't stand them, and I do not mind feeding them to my snake, in fact I kind of enjoy it. I know if I were her, and I found out there were 2 mice missing in my house, i'd be gone as well, until terminix showed me the bodies.

I once realized I had a wild mouse in my house, and all i'm going to say is it was a very stressful week.

Anyone else have mouseaphobia?

I'm definitely not afraid of them but I try to focus on their 'gross' qualities- it makes them easier to feed to the snakes. Like their scratchy little claws. And the nasty ones that bite are really hard to get attached to.

I suggest getting a hav-a hart trap. It catches them alive. After having an escapee rat once I realized it's a must have! I'm not sure of the spelling of the trap but it works (I've used it twice sucessfully). Obviously your wife will know whats up when you break it out. Good luck.

Yea dont do the sticky pad ones, Came home to mice feet one day, now I dont care how much you hate mice thats just wrong, never found the mouse.
