Keeping mites away

Since controlling mites seems to be a popular subject right now, can you all share your tips for maintenance control of mites and the frequency of that maintenance?

Once a month I spray some PAM on a cloth and wipe the top of each tub with that cloth after I clean.

What else should I be doing? Any other ideas?

I'm confused... are mites really that prevalent? I've been fortunate to never have had mites, but if I did I would think that once I treated for them they would be gone for good after their life cycle is over. I'm not sure why someone would need to do preventative treatments unless they are exposed to many new snakes such as a pet store. :confused:

Your exactly right Lawrence, mites don't just pop up in a clean collection. Either you have them or you don't, so if you don't have them there is no need to treat profilactically for them. With proper quarantine measures in place, there is no worry about having them in a large collection, which can be quite the chore getting rid of them. Hopefully you will never have to treat your animals for mites Alice.

If you don't have mites in your current collection, you shouldn't get them unless you don't quarantine any additional animals. I've made it a habit to treat whatever quarantine cage I have for mites when I get a new animal in, whether I know it has mites or not. That's worked for me.

I can attest to quarantining saving mites spreading to a collection - our boa turned out to have mites, but was safely quarantined away. One full application of Provent-a-mite as described on the can and they were dead as doornails and have not returned. =)
