sometimes you gotta do things yourself
what would you guys think if i told you that i wanted to get a job at a nearby petco? they're looking for a "reptile person" since the one they have is leaving them and i offered to help them with the reptiles section. since i hear all the stories about how petco doesnt take care of their animals too well, i figured i might as well do something about it and actually work there so hopefully they'll be in better hands with me than any other worker. they actually do sell BP's there(like a few in one tank with 2 hides) and sometimes they have what look like either baby snow corns or baby albino corn snakes and sometimes regular cornsnakes.

i've always wondered if i would work for a petco if given the chance (highly doubt it now that college is almost done)...but i kinda thought about it and realized that you won't be working exclusively with reptiles all the time...theres stocking the shelves and bla bla bla bla...but it comes with the job ya know? if you can deal with that, then go for it.

Not all Petco's are terrible. i've been in a few that had excellent upkeep. You're knowledgeable and know what's required. You can certainly start to work there and educate people and be one of the "good ones"

but keep this in mind...there are ok snakes at Petco, and then there are gorgeous snakes online from reputable breeders. Don't get caught telling people to look online. you may lose your job for that. silly? yes. but it's a business.

Please dont be surprised if your only allowed to do what the company allows. What i mean is they have set "standards" for all of thier stores and will not allow anything outside them. You will not be able to setup the enclosures like you would with yours at home.A freind of mine worked at a local petco and after being suspended a few times for doing something the company did not allow he quit. Please take a guess why he was suspended. He was trying to rid the ball pythons of MITES! Good luck on getting the job though,at least its some money for you.

I second in saying Go for it.
But like joepythons said, don't expect to change a whole lot there, they have their "policy". So like I said you probably wont be able to change a whole lot, but you will be able to take better care of the reptile with what you have to work with. Plus you will be able to give out much better care info to possible new owners than just their rediculous caresheets.

personally, i would rather work for a small mom/pop reptile store or pet store. for me, if i don't agree with a company's policies and ethics, i won't support them in any way...

I agree! I used to work for Petco when I was younger and I went as far as to break the corporate edicts on what type of supplies to use for the animals so that they were getting what was right, not cheaper. I was a manager and I honestly don't know how easy or hard it would be to do now. In the end, if the situation is bad and you can't change it, it will just be depressing for you to work in every day.

However, if you choose to work there, spray yourself down with Provent a Mite before you go home at night. Wouldn't want to bring any nasties home to your collection.
