CB-70 Rack Do-it-Yourself page is finally Here!!

Well it took me a little while, but I finally got the CB-70 rack page finally done. Some of the steps are kind of hard to explain, but I'll answer any questions as best as I can if you need it. Just for those of you who like to build their own stuff, next up will be rat breeder rack. As soon as I get my ner rodent room complete, I will be building about five more racks, and I will put them on the site as soon as I can. Be on the lookout for those sometime in February(I think). Very awesome Tim! How are you liking the PVC instead of the plastic hardware cloth? I've been using plastic peg board for mine, but I like the PVC idea better I think.

great instructions tim! Someday I am going to make a rack like that, but for now I will stick with cutting pieces of melamine and MDF and just building a cabinet/shelf type rack. Christmas was good for me, I will be calling soon about that pastel.

edit: where did you get the PVC from? Is that like FRP from home depot?

What is the total cost for supplies for this rack, without tubs?

Awesome step-by-step Tim! I could definitely see trying the PVC for the tops of our next rack instead of the plastic hardware cloth. What thickness of PVC did you use? Did you have a plastic fabrication company drill the holes in that pattern, or did you do it yourself? Well done!!

James, I have only had it set up for about a week, so I haven't had enough time to properly evaluate the difference yet. I am waiting on a few sheds from this rack to see if the closed tops help to maintain humidty.

Evan, thanks for the reply. As far as the PVC, it is 1/8 inch. The holes and design were done by me. For the design, I stacked 5 pieces of PVC and topped them with a piece of pegboard. I then clamped them all together and drew the design on the pegboard. I then drilled holes through the pegboard to make the design. The first five sheets that I did I drilled with a regular bit, and didn't like the ratty look of the holes. I then talked to Sean at EbN, he has been working with PVC for a little while, and he sent me to www.tapplastics.com, where I ordered a specialty bit. This plastidril bit works great. Perfect holes.

Tim, the rack with hardware cloth costs about $85 and with PVC it costs about $125. The heat tape and Helix run about $180 (keep in mind that the next 2 racks built don't need another thermostat, because the Helix can run them). The tubs cost about $120 and the bowls that I use are about $30. All said and done, I can build three racks ready to rock and roll for about $1000. I use my savings versus a commercial rack to buy more snakes. Don't get me wrong, I will start buying some nice racks later, but for now, I enjoy building my own.
