We had some friends over today and got to introduce them to all our snakes (BP's, BCI and the Milk) as well as Sprocket the Crested Gecko. They are a family that's very interested in a nice normal male BP for a pet in 2007 when hopefully we produce our first hatchlings. It was a blast! The mom has had some interactions with a BP owned by a friend but was just fascinated at all the different sizes and colors/shades of the normals we have as well as Riordan our sweet YB male. Sev the BCI and Emi the Milksnake were on their best behaviour (I swear we have the sweestest natured colubrid ever hatched LOL).
The older child, Emma, is 7 and just dove right into snake handling like an old pro. I could kick myself for not thinking to take pics but I was just too excited to see this little girl so entranced by the snakes and showing no fear at all. She and her mom were both receptive to learning about why the BP's have labial pits and all that sort of stuff. They stayed and watched two of the 06's eat mice and Emma wasn't even put off a bit by it.
Then we had a lovely tour of our little rat breeding operation and Amy (the mom) who thought she'd be scared of the rats fell in love with them within minutes. We explained carefully to Emma that some rats have names and are here for keeps and some rats have no names and are for food. Amazing how she accepted this as just the way it is.
The whole family is coming back again (Dad was at work today) to spend some more time with the BP's. I think they'll make a wonderful herp owning family. I know little Emma had future herper written all over her. LOL
