I would say if the price is right, go for it. As far as I know, Fender guitars are still decent. If you know someone who plays that can try one out for you, so much the better.

My dad has had several Stratocasters and I have played several too.. always like them.. well, as long as they are the American made ones.

What style of music will he be playing most of? thats always something to consider when choosing a guitar as some are more suited to certain types of music whereas some are sort of "all purpose".........also, has he expressed an interest in a particular shape/colour and/or brand name?

    Re: electric guitar
he's 13... he loves metal... heavy metal. so we are getting him a peavey (spell?) amp as that's what was recommended to us.

and at this point... he doesn't know anything about electric guitars so he doesn't have a preference.

My first amp was a Peavey, and they are my favourite, especially the performance series, if I ever buy my own stage setup, it will be Peavey top to bottom LOL

If I were you, I would check this out http://www.zzounds.com/item--EPISPII
thats the one I'd be buying him, but I'm biased since I'm a Les Paul freak LOL but from what you said, its likely going to deliver more of what he'll be after...p.s. Black is hot ;) :D

here is a good review page for that model in particular http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/revie...l_2/index.html
all the new kids are playing them :P

if your looking to order from a Canadian retailer, theres a shop in my city that has an online shop and does shipping, let me know if you want the link
