    question about orange ghosts
ok so my ball is 66% het orange ghost. one of his brothers is an orange ghost.
if i want to produce an orange ghost do i need to buy a female orange ghost or can i produce them with a 100% female het orange ghost? and what should i expect to pay for a female orange ghost?

btw, here's a pic of my little guy:

It depends on if your male proves out. There is a 66% chance that he is het, but he could still prove out to be a normal. If he is indeed a het then pairing it with a het or visual hypo should get you some hypos. I haven't looked at any hypo ads in some time, but I would guess that most people would want somewhere around $2k for a female.

    that's $2k for a baby i'm assuming?

also if i bought a hypo female and bred her with my male would she produce hypos?

That would be for a hatchling.

She would produce hypos with your male if your male proves out. There are no guarantees when you have possible hets. All of the babies from the clutch would be 100% hets, though, so you could use one of those to breed back to the female hypo if your guy doesn't prove out.

You would also have to make sure the lines are compatible with each other or you could end up with nothing but hets even if you're male really is one.

well first of all thanks for answering all my n00b questions.

so does the 66% het mean the likelihood of one of the offspring being a hypo is 66%? if not, what exactly does 66% het mean?

and how do i ensure the lines are compatible?

It's no problem. The percentage refers to the how likely it is that the snake is a het. So there is a 66% chance that yours is het hypo, and a 34% chance that it is just a normal. 50% hets have a 50-50 shot at being het or normal.

If you have the money to do so, I would recommend getting a hypo female to prove him out with.

well this is my first ball. i just got him sunday but i was really intrigued by his hypo brother (who was $800).

i figure i better gain some more experience before i consider breeding but for some reason i am starting to get somewhat obsessed with ball pythons in general and all the amazing morphs especially.

i just might be saving for a hypo!

'66% het' means your ball is 66% likely to be 100% het

Edit: Notes to self to refresh a page before replying so as to not answer a question that has already been answered. :P

If you want to get them pretty cheap then wait until all of the hatchlings start getting imported again next year. Quite a bit of hypos slip in as normals, and you can usuallly get them a fair bit less than what they would be from a breeder if you buy it off someone who was lucky enough to find one.
