using furniture for a rack
My little brother is getting new furniture tomorrow and I am keeping his chest of drawers and dresser to try and convert to a rack. Anyone ever done this before? I am just going to cut out all the junk on the inside so I am left with just the walls and slap some shelves in there with flexwatt and make it a hatchling rack. Wish me luck whenever I start!

hmmm... i wonder what the dresser is made of and how it's been painted/stained etc. i'm wondering if it will become toxic when heat is added?

Stripping it and redoing the inside is definitely on the least of to do's. Didn't think of what it was made of.
Re: using furniture for a rack
If it's poor quality it will fall apart when you take out the insides. Most furnature peices are of poor quality. And the good quality stuff, you don't want to turn those into racks, you could get good money for them.
Be prepared for that. Also, you have to think about how much weight you are putting in it, and how to modify your plans to suit it.

A lot of furniture is made from pine....but so long as its sealed properly, I don't think that would be a problem. Just be careful about the issue that Tanya brought up....make sure the structural integrity of the furniture isn't compromised.

I used a dresser for a rack before I built the bigger one. I just took out the drawers and added plywood to the top and bottom of each drawer, worked well but it was just too darn big.
