Diffrent stages of RI....
What are the early stages of RI and what are the later stages of it when it becomes more serious...
Am I right? Early stage= poping/weezing sound
Later stange= bubbles from noise, open mouth breathing and liquids from mouth and noise...
Im asking this because alot of people said if its the early stage a vet visit is not necessary.. Just turn up temp a bit and lower humidity and she should fight it off by her self... My snake had popping sound every times it breaths so I turned up the temp and a couple of days later its gone... But now I hear a occasional pop... What should I do? And does the eyes being dry have anything to do with RI?
Im so upset.. I only had the snake for 2 weeks!!! It already has mites, dry eyes and possiable RI... *** **** pet store... I knew they were not living in the best conditions but I did't expect that many problems... When it got her she did't have mites and I couldn't hear no sounds.. but I couldn't see her eyes becoz she was in blue.. Advice please...
Re: Diffrent stages of RI....
Dry eyes? Do they have dimples? Raise the humidity... that should help with the eyes and the RI.
Re: Diffrent stages of RI....
order a can of provent-o-mite and use as directedfor the mites.
for the dry eyes boost up the humidity to optimum percent. im assuming by dry eyes you mean they are caving in because of lack of moisture.
for the popping and wheezing take him to the vet. boosting temps, etc. will only cover it up for it to come back later and possibly worse.
Re: Diffrent stages of RI....
Provent a mite is on its way... and No its not the indent in the eye... It looks like little cracks or lines running through the eye... humidity is fine its at 55-60%... So are you guys telling me a snake can not fight off early signs of RI on its own?? It just doesn't really make sence to me... Its like us having a very minor cold and we run to the hospital right away... :confuzd:
Re: Diffrent stages of RI....
the lines in the eye are retained eyecaps. soak the snake in warm water for a little bit then genty rub them off with a que-tip. if it doesnt come off just put the snake back and make sure its humidity is 70-80% for the next shed.

I have a ball python and a few weeks after I got him, he was showing signs of an RI, bubbles coming out the mouth, mucous in the mouth and such, so I took him to a vet immediatly after I noticed the signs and I was told that with medication he would have a 50/50 chance of living, he did pull through however and has been fine ever since! I recommend taking him/her to the vet ASAP to get treatment started! Snakes are capable of getting over an RI, but a vet can make that even more possible with medication and such.

The lines in the eye may also just be from low humidity. They do not have to be retained caps.
Re: Diffrent stages of RI....
You can't compare a snake's illness to the illness a human may suffer. An RI must be treated by a vet. Raising the temps can make it seem like it has gone away...but it will still be lingering and can flare up even worse the next time temps drop below optimum levels.
Double-triple-quadruple check your husbandry to help keep things from getting any worse before you can get him to the vet.
And don't mess with his eyes! IF he happens to have retained eyecaps, it won't hurt them to stay until the next shed, if he doesn't rub them off by himself in the meantime. But you could do irreversable damage by trying to remove eyecaps that aren't there....or even if they are there, you still run a very high risk of injuring the snake if you don't know exactly what you're doing.
I'm sorry this is turning out to be a difficult experience for you...but if you stick with it, and get the snake healthy and settled into a proper environment....you'll have a friend for life. ;)

He doesn't have retained eye caps... and the humidity is fine 55-60% thats the werid part... His eyes and mites and RI pretty much all showed up at the same time!!! I wondering whats affecting his eyes?? Mites? or the RI?
She seems fine now... just ate last night... No bubbles/mucus in the mouth... Took the mice down like a beast... But still has the occasional pop sound...
