giving medicne...possible RI???
i've been giving my BP his antiboitics for worms and noticed his mouth has been really saliva-y after the meds, could this be a sign of RI...when the vet gav him the first dose of meds he didn't say anythign about it, but when you give him the meds he squirts a little out of his nose and leaks some on the side of mouth, then sits for about 5min in my hands opening his mouth and closing...i dont hear weezing or popping, unless it's too light to hear...how loud will it be if he's weezing or popping...
sorry abotu all the ?'s but i'm just over protectiev i guess....
thanks
Dan
Re: giving medicne...possible RI???
You're not getting the meds into your snake's throat for swallowing, filling his mouth, and its getting into his glottis. That's why its coming out his nose. He's working his mouth that way to try to get the stuff out of his mouth. Basically, he's exhibiting the symptoms of RI, but the symptoms are created by the meds. You need to be very careful to get the meds into his throat, and out of his glottis! You want the meds to get to his stomach, not his lungs!

Re: giving medicne...possible RI???
yeah i'm not getting it into the little hole he breathes out of..well not with the syringe...maybe it's coming back up...do you recomend sticking it down further and hold there for a couple seconds?
Re: giving medicne...possible RI???
I am going through the same process and I gave up on giving the
medicine directly to the snake. I put it in the prey right before a feed.
I feed live. I know it sounds slightly horrific but it did work like a charm and
the mouse was dispatched quickly. My Vet suggested it as a last resort.
Re: giving medicne...possible RI???
i was giving him his meds today and felt poping while he was breathing form time to time....was no weezing...i'm gonna call vet tomorrow, he should be able to just give me some antiboitics. thanks
for the help
Re: giving medicne...possible RI???
What method are you using? Im confused?
I use a bottle of amikacin(sp) supplied by my local vet and 2 different size syringes depending on the size of the snake. You inject the amount of amikacin depending on the weight of the snake and always in the upper 1/3 of the body directly into the muscle. Doing it in the lower portions of the snake can cause kidney failure and result in death.
That how I cure an RI. How are you using syringes in the snakes mouth?
Re: giving medicne...possible RI???
the syringes are for the worms....he devoloped ri ithink for the POS zoo med uth pad...
i bumped up temps 4-5 degs on each side untill i can get in otuch with my doctor

If the meds are coming out of his nose, then they ARE getting into his glottis (the little hole). Not saying you are getting them in there, but his mouth is filling and then it goes into his glottis. Yes, stick it down further and be careful that when you see the meds start to come into his mouth, STOP! Let that go down, then continue. Are you hearing the popping before you start, or after? If after, the meds will cause the popping. If before, it is possibly RI.
If the meds get into the glottis, the SNAKE will think he has an RI, and posture himself to clear the "mucous" INTO his lungs. Not where you want those meds!

Re: giving medicne...possible RI???
How about you get proper training on how to administer the meds from a vet and quit playing doctor at your animal's expense?

You would use a "de-wormer" to treat worms, not anti-biotics. If you're administering a medication to a snake orally and it's coming out the snakes nose, you're doing it wrong. Go back to the vet and have him/her show you again. ;)
