heater

Well last night we had a severe temp spike outside and the temps in my house dropped a bit too. I woke up to find my tanks around 70/80 and all I could think was :eek: !!! So today I went to wally world and picked up this nice little piece

Paid $25, a great price if you ask me. Has a thermostat on top of it to help control temps and I am just waiting for it to warm up so I can get a temp in my room.

Sometimes those heaters can get out of the specified range, especially with temperature spikes. It would be a good idea to control that with a Ranco/Johnsons thermostat, so that you don't have any dangerous spikes. Someone on another forum recently came home to his snake room to find that the room temperature was 100 degrees, and several of his snakes died. :eek:

Ive used something similar before but it really didnt do the job for me, I had to check and see what the temps were very often. I ended up going to Walmart and getting a oil filled radiator heater and thats been very good, its kept the temps pretty constant.

that doesn't make any sense to me. sorry... but since our outside temps often get that high in the summer and we seldom loose anything (i did loose two anoles during the heat wave this summer but that was after a couple of weeks of heat) - i can't imagine that having your snake room get too warm would kill your snakes?

please correct me if i'm wrong... i'm just a bit :confused:

Sometimes the "thermostats" on the heaters aren't really that great. I doubt that most are designed for 24/7 use, so my guess is that they make the thermostats okay enough for use when it's really cold. Again, just a guess, but the thermostats aren't like Rancos or Johnsons that control it to a degree or two. They can get too high if they're not properly controlled, much like UTHs (but not THAT high lol). It makes sense to control everything you use to heat your reptiles, or bad things can happen.

oh i agree with you... i just don't think 100 degree temp is going to kill snakes (in the short term)

Neither did I; but it did happen to someone (am I allowed to post links to other forums?) named Trevor on the cornsnakes.com forum. It's crazy.

oh you don't have to prove it to me. i'm just saying i can't imagine a short term temp increase to 100 degrees would harm a snake. :P
