Glad to see that you got a refund; seems like they were trying to get double rent?! Yikes!
I know how life is on both sides; my fiancee runs a property/rental management firm, and we just got the keys to our first owned rental property; and at the same time, we are renting the farmhouse we live in.

OK, today I hate renting. I had called my apartment complex on Monday, because although I had written down the check number and rent in my register, I could not remember dropping off rent and asked them if they had it. They checked and said no. Thinking that I somehow didn't write the check (although that number was missing) I took them at their word and wrote another one and dropped it off.

Fast forward to today. Stop to get gas and my debit card is denied. I immediately thought of that second check, called the bank to check, and sure enough - two checks for rent deposited on the same day. Plus $80 in overdraft fees.

I'm hoping that they will come to a resolution that is satisfactory to me. Since they bank at the same bank as me - I told them the only resolution that I will be happy with is a wire transfer of the extra rent payment plus over-draft fees.

Gah! What a way to start your weekend! And I was going to buy feeders for the snakes today - not happening now.

i bet they'll work it out for you robin. i had something like that happen years ago. my landlord cashed my rent cheque a few days early... and it was my daughter's birthday on the 31st... well needless to say when i went to pay for her cake i had no money in my account. i called the bank and they reversed the charges (we got paid at midnight on the 31st so the rent would have been covered by the 1st) and we were able to buy her cake.

i was so upset with the landlord. i told her that from then on... she could come by on the 1st and pick up her cheque, no more early cheques for her!

Well, they are overnighting a check to me via Fedex to arrive tomorrow morning early to cover the extra rent payment and overdraft fees and will cover any other over draft fees that may occur.

That's good to hear. Everyone makes mistakes...and it's always nice to hear there are still people/businesses in the world willing to make it right when they do mess up.

Glad you got such a quick resolution to what was hopefully just a clerical error on their part Robin. Not all landlords are nearly as good about clearing these messes up so quickly.

Thanks everyone! They got a chastising from their corporate office to slow down when entering checks, because apparently they entered both checks within 5 minutes of each other in their system. Only one person does the entering.

I think also the fact that I've been there 11 years with no missed or late rent went a long way towards getting a fast resolution.
