    Country living STINKS!
    Literally....

I woke up Sunday morning at 4:30am with the pungent aroma of skunk filling my bedroom. It happens occasionally, so I get up to close the bedroom windows. However this time it ain't working.

By now my wife is up and we're going through the house to close the other windows... only the odor is getting worse. MUCH worse. It no longer smells like skunk, now it smells like garlic. No, more like garlic times 100 with a little burnt rubber mixed in. :puke2:

It turns out my dog got sprayed in the backyard against the house. :fart: :dog: We didn't even hear her bark (and she's a big time barker), so we think they both must have surprised each other while she was sleeping.

At that point we couldn't go back to sleep as we could barely breath or prevent our gagging mechanism from kicking in. So instead we packed up the car and spent the entire day at my in-laws. On the way home we stopped at Walmart to pick up an arsenal of odor fighting paraphernalia. When we got home the odor was still there, but at least the house was livable again. I got to work spraying odor neutralizers all over the place, but I think we're still going to have to wash all the clothes and bed linens.

Hmm... I wonder if there are any skunk eating snakes that can thrive in this area??

I hear ya! It's pretty much a once a week thing here at my place. My outside dog has been sprayed twice this year, and she does everything she can to avoid them. Not only do they like to stink up this town, but they love tearing up my yard looking for snacks to eat. I have yet to find a sure fire way to keep them away. That's what I get for living next to a river and dense woods...

But I still love the Country livin.

Can't argue with that. I guess we should consider ourselves lucky as we've been here for almost 5 years, and this is our first "spraying".

Go to a good outdoors store and pick you up some skunk shampoo....I forget the brand that I used last time...but it worked pretty good and will definately take the smell off your dog ;)

    Reminds of me something...

I used to do costuming for a couple of local community theatres...anywho, I was in the green room during one show, watching the show over a monitor and talking with the techs on headset.

All of sudden, the audience started snickering and then laughing - and at not a particular funny part of the play we were doing. A minute later, we finally smelled it. A skunk has obviously sprayed near the theatre and the air conditioning intake had sucked it in and "fumagated" the theatre. Luckily it didn't stink enough to stop the show and seemed to clear within about 15 minutes...but it was pretty funny.

Later that night, after the show, I got in my car to go home and wham, smelled it again. Enough smell had seeped into the car, but hadn't had a chance to air out yet...again, pretty funny.

Skunk smell is definitely on a funny-o-meter...from 0 "eeew skunk" to 10 "omg we're selling the house". Sounds like Lawrence hit an 8. :D

Thanks for the suggestions, Daniel an Stangs. We don't have Krogers around here, but I'll look into the outdoor stores in the area. In the mean time, I think I'll try some home remedies like the tomato sauce and another one I read about using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. Fortunately it got the dog on the rear so I won't have to worry about getting anything in her eyes.

i feel your pain lawrence! growing up i lived in the country and there was a totally uninsulated sliding glass door in my bedroom. i would wake up to skunk smell ALL the time! sometimes it was so bad i couldn't even go back to sleep. pair that up first thing in the morning with freshly spread chicken and turkey manure and you've got a downright awesome thing going on... :eyepoppin
