shredded newspaper?

I was thinking; back when I used cypress, my BCI loved to bury himself/burrow into it. Same with aspen. Now, with this bout of mites we're having, Ineed to use less naturalistic sub. for awhile. I use paper towel for my BPs, but how about this idea; using paper-shreddered newspaper for my BCI? Its edges are not sharp at all, and I think it would give him something to bury into. Any ideas?

I used to use that for my sand boas.. works nice, just took forever with my little lethargic paper shredder.

I made some; will post a pic later on. I put it in last night, and he seems to be using it to his advantage! I felt bad with him just sitting in there with nothing to bury in; he has his hides but seemed to prefer just winding himself around them and sitting out in the open. His temps are all right; but he has now buried into the n-paper shreds; my only concern now is them getting into the waterbowl and sucking all the water into the rest of the substrate!

Here ya go! It's the best I could do; the cage doors are plexi and not too great to photograph through. I had just put Apache back and he is moving things all around; I need to get a flat piece of n-paper under all this stuff; it's pushed into the back of the cage, lol.Apache should be on the snake version of Home Design TV.. "And shoving all your substrate over HERE is GOW-GEOUS!!" But I have his UTH set so he doesn't get burned.
I was thinking; it'd be pretty to use colored construction paper for this, wouldn't it?? :) But the dye might be harmful.. guess not.

That's all I use! Newspaper is great because it's cheap, it's available, it's easy to clean up, and it holds moisture without growing mold (I had that problem with the aspen). It also doesn't look half bad if you use the infared bulbs (ends up looking like red bedding). I lay down about 3 layers of solid newspaper, then add some shredded paper on top. The only downside is that fresh paper can leave ink smudges on the snake's belly and chin.
