Should I feed my new girl?

Alright well general rule of thumb is to let my new snake settle in for a week after getting her before handling/feeding her. I *think* that's normally said whenever your snake is shipped to you...they get a little stressed

Well i picked up a 1725g female this weekend. she had about a 40 minute drive inside a pillow case to her new home with me. Tomorrow is feeding day and she has been in her enclosure since Saturday. when I was inspecting her she was SUPER tame and probably one of the most calm snakes i've ever had. not at all head shy.

Would you attempt to feed?

I let my big girls acclimate for three weeks before I offered their first meals. She sound big enough that 3 weeks wouldn't hurt her. Only you will be able to tell, because you can look at her.


Both of them (adult female pet store surrenders) ate every week without fail after giving them a long acclimation period.

Even tho it's close to breeding season? She's over the suggested breeding weight, so i'm not concerned about her being underweight for this breeding season...I just want to make sure she'll be alright to make some eggs :)

Don't know - I'd defer to Adam or one of the other experienced breeders for an answer to that.

How long is she?

oooohh i havn't had her long enough to measure i would guess ~3 feet. she's a chunky lil girl :)

Nate, I gave my girl a full week to "acclimate" just from switching her from her tank to her tub. No traveling involved! :P It's not the time or distance travelled...it's finding themselves in a new place where everything looks different, smells different, and feels different. They have to re-establish their own personal territory, and that can take time.

Personally I let any new animal acclimate for at the very least a week (usually a couple). I also normally don't feed for at least a week, but will offer food then. I hear ya on wanting to swing in the new girl right into breeding, I just picked up a nice sized female for this season. The new female being in shed is helping me not to mess with her while she acclimates but I'm planning to start breeding actions near the end of the month first part of next, this should give ample time for adjustment and a few good meals.
