box turtle rescue

i was driving down a road which on both sides due to construction was no forest. i found a nice sub adult-adult box turtle wandering in the middle of the road. i picked it up and brought it home(about 10 miles away.) ive read that box turtles have a strong homing instinct and i need to know wheather relocating it is a good idea or not. hes already eaton some canned"box turtle food". thanks in advance.

Would you consider it as a pet?

i have a 20x 19 foot fence that he is in and cannot escape(the fence is designed for smaller dogs) and if neccesary i will keep him :)

Check local laws, as well. In some areas, it is illegal to keep them.

I would agree with Tigerlily as I am not familiar with Florida laws.

You are right in the fact that turtles have a strong homing range and are limited to that range. If you decide to let him go back, I would not wait too long and do it in about a mile or so from where you found her/him.

also be aware turtles are fast diggers and will go under almost any fence. If you live in town it will most likely get grabbed by a child, dog or get struck by a car. I have seen them dig out in under a half hour. If you decide to release it do it in the area you found it and soon.
