I have to agree some petco's suck. Some are fairly decent if they are lucky to have a reptile keeping employe or 2. I went today and some lady was buying anole's and when one got out of the cage the guy there says "Woops, we lose them all the time" What and idiot!! There was also 2 dead baby beardies with crickets eating them in one of the cages. I just try not to let it bother me anymore even though it never gets easy

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
It really boils down to the employees in each store. I know of a Petco nearby that has "OK" coudntions; the rodents all have nice Carefresh bedding and are seperated by sex. The fish tanks are OK; actually stellar if you compare them the the tanks of other local stores; for some reason their water at this petco is always crystal clear. They do have a knowledgible staff there.. but the reptiles kind of upset me. The caging is not so much inadequate, as, crowded; multiples in a cage, and you know how they set up their wall units; boas in cages beside BPs with only a grate in between.. can yousay IBD potential?
Pet stores are pretty-much redundant for me anyway. I buy supplies for the herps either online or at walmart (pottery for hides, etc.) And I breed rats for food, and get their supplies from a local feed store.. I just go into pet stores for novelty reasons and to buy the occasional fish.

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
I have to admit most Petco's are not nice places.
Luckly the one by my house where I get Ozzy's rats is pretty decent. They actually have a reptile guy working in reptiles and a fish guy in the fish dept.
They where recently remodeled and have nice set up's for the fish, rodents and reps. W/ climate controlled cages etc.
The guy that takes care of the reptiles actually breeds bp's and retic's
It still is a chain petstore but a little better than most.

Re: Ugh I Hate Petco!!!
The last time I went into a Petco was enough to make me never want to step foot in the place again, it wasn't because of overcrowding animals, it was because of the information they gave to a customer.
A woman and her 10 to 12 year old son were there buying his first tarantula, which they unfortunately carry. The salesman told them that an H. lividium, or colbolt blue, would be a good first tarantula. These are old world tarantulas and are aggressive, and usually spend most of the time hiding in deep burrows. Then I looked closer at the tarantula in question. It also was a hooked out male!! That means its life could be measured in months, and this idiot is telling these people that this aggressive spider at the end of its life will be a good pet for this child for years to come!!!!!! He also told them that it would be an excellent hand pet!!!!!!!
I couldn't help it, I had to jump in. I did. I whipped out my pictures of my tarantulas to prove I had some and knew what I was talking about. The woman, thank heavens listened to me and left with out the blue.
Then the employee called the manager and had me kicked out of the store.

I don't know much about Tarantulas, in fact I'm an extreme arachnaphobic, but I see where you're coming from. I'd have said something to the manager such as, "******* you, you ******. I'm going to **** your **** in the **** whilst ****ing your little **** of a croney over there. **** you!". Or, "Why don't you tell the people the truth, or are you too busy making profits to know any better?" I think the second one is a bit more rational.
