Chris,i know most suggest to cool your snakes down before breeding time,i do not.I have bred ball pythons and my corn snake 2yrs in a row and never changed anything.I veiw the cooling down process as a lost time of building up your snakes for breeding time.I feed them right up to when they chose to refuse eating.I feel by this extra feedings gives them(females) the extra boost they need to produce the eggs and inturn healthy offspring.I will be doing the same this season as well.

OK, I thought when they were being cooled you do not feed them :oops: lol.Once again ya gotta love ball pythons :P

do you feed smaller items because of the decrease in temp? or do you stick with small rats (as opposed to smaller rats)?

Joe,
If you dont cool and just keep it the same will you tell me what you run your temps at? and you keep it that way year round correct?
Lastly, what month do you start to introduce your males?

Artificial cooling can be done at any time of the year.... Cooling in November means one or two things..
1.) Less time for breeding, if you do your warm up in the same month as most of the breeding calendars say to start cooling in Oct. If they say cool in Oct, they usually say the Warm-Up is in March... so it would just mean one less month of pairings...
2.) Just extend your warm up to April.
3.) As Joe said, just don't cool at all... There are some breeders out there that no longer thinks cooling is necessary.... Here's my opinion on the matter:
With properly cycled lights and temps during the cooling period, you have a specific time of year you are giving yourself up to the possibility of gravid girls and/or setting up eggs/hatching babies.
From all of the different breeders I have talked with, it seems that the "Warm-up" signals the snake that its time to ovulate... Without a Warm-up, or a Cool-down prior, the only cue that the snake has is environmental changes.... these environmental changes could be as significant as a low-pressure system moving in for a few days, to an unusually warm winter, or many other cues that could "trigger" that ovulation to happen.
If you look at some of the breeding records around.... eggs can come, with the Oct-Mar cooling/warming period from April to June or July... without cooling, I'm starting to see a LOT of people getting eggs in September... which means babies in November... well, if you start pairing in November, or October... you have no time to get those females back up to size for the following season...
Just a few thoughts..

Chris,i keep my temps at the 90ish setting all year round.I start placing my male with the female in December.I get eggs around mid Feb and they hatch around mid April.The only thing that really changes is our weather outside and like mentioned above this could be the sign for them its breeding time lol.
