Our first Boa!

Not as fancy as the Caulker Cay I still plan on, but a cute little boa nonetheless!

Meet Irwin the rubber boa named in honor and memory of the late great Steve Irwin who was all about educating people on weird "scary" animals and appreciating all animals... even and especially the not so very fancy ones like this little sweetie.

He's so itty bitty... I got a few pics and a quick vid and am now leaving him to settle in. His current hides are WAY too big for that itty bitty self, so I cut a hole into the lid of an old medicine holder thingy. He remains unimpressed and would much rather hang out on/in the inner lip of the rubbermaid lid. :P As long as he can't get out that's fine, but he's so little I'm worried he'll find a way. I'm keeping an eye on him and so far so good. So sweet and mellow and feels SO surreal. Crazy smooth and soft. He needs teensy hides, poor thing. I underestimated his bittiness. He was born in March of 2006, still just a wee baby. When he's all growed up he'll turn a dark mossy green... right now he's a sort of khaki. Any tips for micro hides?

Didn't think I'd be able to get anymore snakes before we move, but rubber boas don't even need a heating implement and is just so tiny, doesn't take up any space at all...

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh i use a water dish turned upside down for my tiny cornsnakes :)

They don't need heating? That is odd...

For Oreo being just a little smaller than that as a baby, I used sauce cups and the tiniest of the sour cream/cream cheese cups for her. She doesn't often use them b/c she likes to burrow being a KSB but any small plastic cup turned upside down in the bedding would work.

Rubber boas are awesome! The resemblence to an earthworm is definitely amazing...yet much better because of the lack of slime.:P

Thanks! He's such a sweetie, the hands off week is so hard. :) And he does look like an earthworm with a face! Hehe, I look forward to when he turns dark green when Irwin gets older too. Rather cool to have a snake that's actually green. :snake:

Thanks RuLyn! Good idea! Poor little dude is a bit overwhelmed by the vastness of everything I think. Our corn was bigger than this when we got him and much younger! Even our water dishes seem a bit big for the guy, lol.

They are odd little snakes, Dougie. Optimal temps around 70 to 75! Everything I've found on them says no heat neccessary, room temp is perfect. I'm actually more worried about him getting overheated in our place as it can get near 80 in here in the summer even with the A/C. But we're keeping him in a cool corner where it shouldn't get too warm.

Cool boa; their little faces always look so cute to me :)
