    anyone use sterilite tubs
I want to have more mice for breeding so I wanted to know if anyone here uses sterilite tubs for mice. I would rather that since I can find larger ones for cheaper than a large tank, but i am worried that they would chew through the plastic. Anyone have this problem?

I use sterilite with rats and no chewing through yet.

The biggest thing to watch out for is internal ledges, steps, or protrusions. Mice seem to get bored easily and will chew their way out. The only company I know of that makes smooth sided tubs is Iris.

I have had good success with kitty litter pans. Preferably the top lip would be rounded.

My mice are almost as bad as gerbils as far as constantly chewing.

I currently use Sterilite tubs for mice. I give them either a wooden and/or plastic toy block to chew on, and so far only 1 tub has a few teeth marks on it from when I forgot the block for a few days. However, now I am starting rats and am looking into the kitty litter pans.

I like how you added "yet" to your reply! :D I have not raised my own rats but I did have a gerbil in one once (his tank broke!) and after I put the airholes in there he managed to climb up there and chew his way out starting with one of the holes. I didn't have anything else in there for him to chew on at the time as someone else suggested though.... now if I could just find the little critter!!

    Peace!

I used sterilite for rats, but I did NOT drill holes in the sides. They love to chew a started hole. I cut most of the top out and ziptied wire mesh to it. Plenty of ventilation and they seemed fine. I gave mine things to chew as well.
Mice would be fine too, I had some in one for a short period before I quickly went "Uggg" at the odor and switched to all rats.
I'm hesitant to put my African soft-furred rats in sterilite though.

Exactly what I did! And it worked for me. I still have a few of the tubs I bred rodents in, and they are being used for other critters (with modifications ofcourse).. and to this day, they have no teeth marks or evidence of rodent chewing.

My tubs only lasted a week or 2 before the rats chewed out, Although I hate aquariums, I hate rats getting out oven more
