AAHH!! It's HUGE!!

Ok, sorry for the title... I was wondering what kind of tort would be a good starter. I like the look of the Sulcatta but they're gigantic, is there a smaller, more manageable species with a similar appearance? Also if any of you do have Sulcattas or something near that size how do you house them? Thanks for the info!!


EDIT: By smaller I mean something like a gopher tortoise or red-eared slider turtle.

He sleeps in a very lrge plastic storage tub about 4' long.He has the run of the yard while we are home. They must be supervised.as they will dig under fencing.When we get moved we are building a escape proof corral in the yard for summer. Must bury mesh about 1 1/2 feet down with wood sides too tall for him to scale. UVB lighting doesn't provide everything necessary so during summer months he gets outside time. After we move he'll get a corral in basement with soaking pool and basking lights.

I'll have to vote Redfoot. I'm biased since I have one...easy care, great personality, and stay relatively "small".:D If you want something smaller than Redfoots there is a variant called the dwarf cherry head redfoot.

Russians will stay small, ecspecially the males (that's all I seem to see) The only drawback is they are all pretty much wild caught. (but I can tell you when Petco has em' on sale, we usually get a flood of them 6 months later)
Redfoots and yellowfoots are great too. They get a bit larger then the Russians, but not an unmanagable size by any means.
Let us not forget the lovable Hermann's Tortoise (Testudo Hermanni) Males get about 5 inches, females average 10 inches. They are managable but a bit on the drab side, if your looking for color, check into the red and yellow foots.
Just remember when you get a tort, your in for a nice long haul.
