Rats Behavior

I always heard that rats need love and care, but whenever I try and hold them they piss and crap all over me, lol.

They're scared. They take calm, gentle handling for a while to get used to you, just like your snake. When I first got ours (at different times) they'd run off and try to dash out of our grasp. Butterscotch even now, still tries to BITE sometimes when he's nervous or scared. All the others are all luv-a-bugs.



Give them time to de-stress in their new home, and get used to you. When U go to handle them, and they start to settle down, blow gently on their faces. It helps them get used to your personal smell. But move slow, be gentle and patient. It's worth it. :)

Again these are living animals. You just got these rats a matter of days ago. They haven't a clue who you are, if you represent a danger to them, they are still getting used to each other let alone some human that's literally scaring the crap out of them. Give them time, try offering some treats from your hands (watch they don't nip your fingers though) and just be patient. They'll come around with time or they won't. Animals are animals and not all of them like being handled a lot or whenever you want to handle them. You have to learn their limits and that's unique to each rat. Also you can't housetrain a rat. They are going to occasionally use you for a bathroom, just like snakes will do, etc. That's just part of having these type of creatures in your life.
