Looking for info on Tree Monitors

Rick and I were picking up some supplies in the reptile shop here in town (which has gotten much better recently, so yay!) and saw a lizard boy that both caught our eye...black tree monitor. The reptile shop boy couldn't pinpoint the age on him/her but s/he sure looked super cool...

Anywho, so I jumped online to try to learn some more about tree monitors but found very little on tree monitors.

Could anyone please point me in some right directions for caresheets, husbandry, keeping info, breeders, etc. for tree monitors? =)

At Daytona, I saw a cage with a "Green Tree Monitor" and a "Blue Tree Monitor" in it. They both looked amazing...almost as if their brilliant colors had been photoshopped, but obviously I was looking at the real thing. The label on the cage said they were both mature...and they were maybe 24" nose to tail-tip, with a long, narrow tail....not anywhere near as big as I figured monitors would get.


They definitely intrigued me and I wanted to talk to the people about them, but their table was swamped with other folks.

Now I guess I should add "Black Tree Monitor" to my list of small monitors to investigate. LOL

varanus beccari or the back tree monitor. tree monitors are very delicate monitors. they stress very easily, and are tender to husbandry mistakes. they're not recommended to first time monitor keepers. thats what i know about them.

some good monitor sites to check out are treemonitors.com and mampam.com.

Figures that the super cool looking lizard that tweaks my interest is not a "good for beginners" one, hehe...but we'll enjoy doing our research on them. I love "window shopping" herps! and hopefully we'll see some more in person at NARBC Anaheim next month.

no way! do you remember what site you saw it on?

See if you can find the issue that Reptiles Magazine did a section on green tree monitors. This was 3 or 4 months ago I think. You won't miss it, big green tree monitor on the front.

Green Tree monitors are very very active, need a lot of space and a lot of humidity. One of my friends owns one. I'll try to get ahold of her to come on the site and post.
