Unusual behavior

So its been twice now that I notice Anubus has spilt over his water bowl at night. Today I go to check on the tanks in the morning like usual and I see that there is yet again no water in the water bowl and he was actually coiled up lying partially underneath it on top of the damp substrate. Temps weren't outside the norm and he has just come out of a shed 2 weeks ago. I thought mites and checked him out but saw nothing. He just ate 2 days ago. I dunno, should I be concerned, he's never done that sorta thing before.

I walked in thinking Deebo had done the same, only to see my cat sitting slyly on the window sill.. Im sure he had something to do with it..!

What type of hides do you have in the enclosure? What are their sizes compared to the ball python?

It could possibly be that your snake is feeling insecure and seeking refuge in the water bowl....then tipping it in the process of getting in and out.

Also, what kind of water bowl are you using? Is it light weight or heavy? Getting a heavier one couldn't hurt if it is light ;)

That sounds about right, not unusual for them to flip a bowl just moving around at night.

He just took down a live rat tonight so I don't think he's feeling insecure. If he tips his water dish again I'm gonna go out and try to find a heavier one. I organized his cage a bit and arranged the foliage a little better to provide more cover. Guess i'll see how it goes thanks.

You can use any normal dog bowl for a water dish. The ones that are plastic and have a wide base (made not to be tipped over) work very well and can actually double as a hide if you cut an entrance hole in the outside rim of the bowl.

Think I'm gonna have to try getting a new bowl, again this morning I found him laying underneat it. I think he just likes being squished by it. I'm thinking if I put it flat on the bottom of the tank instead of on top of the substrate he won't be able to work his way underneath it. Its one of those water bowls that sorta looks like a natural rock, its pretty heavy already but he's a strong snake. If that fails i'm gonna try the dog bowl trick and see how that goes. Thanks for the advice.

They are very destructive when they want to be I had to velcro Orpheus' acuright to the side he love pulling it down and knocking over his bowl. Don't worry they just do these things one will and one want. They all have different personalities, my cat want eat cold cat food you have to warm it in the microwave. First. Don't sweat it.

P.S they make spill proof dog bowls that work GREAT

It may be just your snake. We have one large female that seems to absolutely delight in destroying her tub whenever the mood suits her to do so. Flipped water dishes, hides hauled around, newspaper borrowed and messed with. She's always been like this so I expect that's just her nightly routine sometimes.

Even the wide based ones can be flipped....
