can i take one hide out

I have two hides in my bp's cage,a cave and a log but he never uses the log.The log is pretty big and takes up alot of space,so since he never used it i took it out and he seems to be doing fine with one hide.is this ok or will there be problems down the road.

He may not be using it because it doesn't feel secure enough. And therefore, he may not be cooling off (or warming up, depending on which side they're on) as he should, because he has to choose security over thermoregulating.


Yes...take that hide out. BUT...you should replace it..preferably with one identical to one he already likes.

If he likes his cave hide and it's nice and snug, then remove the log and get an identical cave hide. Yes - they need two hides. They will choose security over thermoregulating. The half log hide is not affording him the security that he needs, which is why he's not using it.

Unless I miss read you only have one hide ??

If this is the case then no your guy needs two hides to help the thermoregulate(sp).
Only one hide will tend to stress them out.

It is recommended actually to provide your BP with two hides and in fact, two identical hides, one in the warm end and one in the cool end of your enclosure. By making the hides identical, the snake won't have to choose between which hide s/he feels more comfortable in and will thermoregulate as needed.

There ya go!

We started out with 2 different hides, a little resin "rock" hide and the half log hide. Cleo never used the half log hide, so we pitched it after reading recommendations here and bought another identical rock hide...and then eventually bought 2 identical larger versions when she got bigger. She thermoregulates regularly. =)
