    power outage!
so last nite we had a bad storm and the power went out... not a big deal considering it's summer and the herps stay in the basement, but now i called the power company and they say power won't be on for 2-7 days!
for this time, i'm taking them all up to my mom and dad's house (they miss them anyway), but in the future, what do y'all do when the power goes out for extended periods?

I bought a generator from Costco last year for around $300 that works pretty well, but it's VERY noisy and quite smelly (exhaust fumes). I was thinking another alternative would be a kerosene floor heater. They're relatively safe as long as you don't keep it in a sealed room.

You know I never thought of those. We hardly ever get them, adn if they occur it only lasts a couple hours. I don't know what I would do if that happend for more than a few hours. Perhaps candles around (not in) the warm side?

Rick and I have talked about getting a UPS for the girls heating, but only for temporary power outages (certainly wouldn't work if the power was out for days).

Note: summer + California = frequent temporary outages

Oh, here in Torrance we have had very little issues. I remember last year the power went out for 20 hours, but because some drunk hit a power line down our block. Luckily then I didn't have any pets to maintain.

well i just moved out of the city to a more rural area and this happens in the first month... i guess there a couple thousand people without power today in my area.
and i dunno about a generator... the neighbors already think we're wierd enough. i was outside the other evening with a flashlight and a digital camera taking pictures of some frogs and insects. he asked me what i was doing and shot me an odd look when i told him.
