Pine 2x4's

I got a couple 2x4's today to make feed dish holders for my cresteds. Is pine wood ok to use.

I'm not sure. I thought pine and cedar were the two types of wood to avoid. Of course I'm not crestie expert. I would avoid it myself, but I prefer to err on the side of caution. Maybe someone else can chime in here.

What kind of dish are you using that you need a holder for? I wish I were handy like that, but alas that is not my forte. :oops:

The only reason I haven't cut anything yet is because I knew of the pine substrate and snakes. I got the idea from Allen Repashy's book Rhacodactylus. Im going to use 1.5oz souffle cups from acemart.com. I noticed that they seem to knock over anything thats taller than 3/4"

Did you get the idea of the feed dish holder from Repashy, or to use pine? Since he is an expert on Crestie's I would go with him. He's WAAAYYYY more knowledable than little old me. :oops:

I got the holder idea from his book. The pic looks like pine but I want to be careful.

i *think* pine 2x4s would be ok to use with cresteds, but i would put a coat of latex based polyurethane on them to be on the safe side, plus that would make them super easy to clean. i polyurethaned some bamboo to use as perches in my crested cages and they are SO easy to clean that way because they don't absorb any food or waste that gets on them--it wipes right off with a damp cloth.

I don't know if they are ok for crestie's but you should seal them as pine especially # 2 pine which is what most 2x4 studs etc are made from do sometimes ooze sap.
I know this from all the houses I've done, especially lately seems the wood is a little more wetter than in years passed.

So just get a latex based poly. Is there any that you reccomend.

hmm, i think i got minwax brand last time? it really doesn't matter though, as long as it is latex and not oil based.
