Used to be a rat cage

This morning Raymond was moved into a new cage. It used to hold my pet rat Pheobe. He instantly seemed on edge. I cleaned it out but he is out and about which he hasnt been in a long time. The humidity is up in his tank and so is his heat. The lid (which is why i switched tanks) Is wooden with small drilled holes in it. Good to keep him in htere?

I wouldnt.... Imagine smelling a pizza all week long and not being able to eat any but once a week, it will drive him crazy!

Snakes are often opportunistic feeders, he may spend a lot of the time hunting to no avail.

Is it really bad for him? I have no clue, but I don't see the point in doing it to him if you have any other options. Have you tried soaking this cage completely in bleach water or some sort of mix for any length of time?



Note: In the wild snakes may eat its prey and then live in its burrow, so I could be wrong, but its up to you and how your snake acts :)

He could be just exploring and checking out the new digs. I imagine a move into any new home would make most bp's act differently for a couple days until they're convinced nothing has really changed and go back into their normal "sleep all day in my favorite hide" routine.


I would, however, make sure the cage was cleaned very thoroughly with bleach or vinegar (rinse rinse rinse!) to get rid of as much rodent smell as possible.

I will have to agree with Jo. He is probably just exploring the new enclosure, but make sure the enclosure is clean.

If you have trouble getting rid of the rodent smell...there are several things that you can do....Personally, I use artificial vanilla flavoring....it seems to take that rodent smell right off....just pour a little in there...splash it around...let it sit for 20 minutes..wipe it out with a paper towl...then reclean the entire enclosure like you normally would. Sometimes you have to reclean twice...ha ha...or it is just your choise between the rodent smell and vanilla.
I do this when I keep mice or rats for a little while(i.e. one of my bps did not eat, i bought too many, etc.) and then feed them off....and have a stinky empty enclosure. A mouse can stink up an enclosure in a day or two, so this is the method that I have found that works the best to get rid of the odor before I store the tubs in 'The Snake Closet".

I'd agree with Judy as well. He's probably just exploring. Ophelia spent an entire just smelling every entire inch of her 40-gallon when I upgraded her.

Just give him another day or so.

And WOW@ the vanilla idea. I'mmae try that the next time I need to clean up...
