    Pedigree papers??
I have a question about breeding BP's.... I have been reading countless posts, did a forum search and read cover to cover "the complete Ball python" and no one has mentioned pedigree papers for BP's.
I bred pedigreed netherland dwarf rabbits for about 10 years and found that pedigree papers helped keep track of the genes, colors (morphs if talking about BP's) and also raised the selling price considerably.

My question is....Why is there no such thing as pedigree papers for snakes?

Any reputable breeder will provide proof of lineage for their snakes. This is especially important in the case of purchasing hets. Any basement breeder can tell you they are selling you a het. All the more reason to purchase from the known, trustworthy folks out there.

I have not received any yet nor have I ever seen an AKC form but I would assume it is a signed statement of lineage with pictures.

There's no "industry" standard .. each breeder does it differently.

Every snake I sell comes with a high gloss, color, photographic ID that details the animals genetics and lineage. I stamp the certificate with my corporate seal to make it more difficult to duplicate. Then, I store every one that I send out in my files (onsite and offsite backup) so that I can confirm the information is the animal is every resold ... or if a buyer is looking to verify the parents of offspring that they are purchasing.

It's not perfect, but it's a start ... This whole thing is so new I think at this point we're doing the best that we can as we stumble forward.

Its a paper with the parents, grandparents and greatgrandparents on the maternal and paternal sides along with their colors, AKC registration #'s etc..

I think that a formal form used by breeders would be a good idea for BP's??
    any thoughts?

I don't think that we're anywhere near that orgainized yet. I have TONS of visual morphs in my collection that I have no idea who the parents were specifically (let alone grandparents ... in some cases, the grandparents were wild snakes in Africa) ... I know who the breeders were that produced/resold them to me ... but I'm sure in a lot of cases some of those guys don't keep as detailed records as I do.

I think that the market has been/is so good over the past 10 years and the seller has been able to get away with a lot. Over time, the market will become much more consumer oriented and breeders are going to have to do better ... but we're just not there yet.

The Ball Python world is not regulated by a governing body like the AKC. (I assume it governs). Without one it would be difficult to implement a standard. I think what Adam does is awesome and more than sufficient.

So do I...I am in the process of purchasing a bunch of his snakes real soon!!

I was just putting the pedigree idea out there and trying to get some feedback!!
But just think if it gets orgainzed by a BP club or whatever, we could have international BP shows or events!!

I think the idea of pedigree/stud book may well be there one day in the BP world. Remember though these are snakes that carry visually unexpressed genetics in some cases, so it's very hard to use the AKC model where a poodle is a poodle is a poodle...you can't be het for poodle LOL. For now I'm quite content with the paperwork I got with our snake from Adam. All the information I could want that Malachi is indeed a 100% het for albino is on it, which will help me verify that his progeny one day are from a sire carrying the albino recessive genetic.
