    Lonesome George
"There is only one Pinta Island tortoise (Geochelone elephantopus abingdoni). It is a male known by his keepers as Lonesome George. And when he dies the Pinta tortoises will be extinct."

Poor old george makes me a bit lonesome. He must be wise beyond us thou, in turn respecting his chelonion friends would compensate for mans cruelty. ( to a degree)

    Thanks Jo,
I'll be around, I've been home from work for a couple of days and I'll be skimming through and catching up on all I've missed while I've been busy dealing with the Fish Store.
    Thanks

That isa really good article. It is hard for me to believe that SOMEONE somewhere doesn't have another Pinta, hoarding it as their own rare tortoise. It is a real bummer, to have the last one of his kind living out his days alone. It is good they got him a friend to hang out with even if he is past wanting to breed.

I wonder if they could somehow extract genetic material or something and freeze it. I know they store reproductive material in what they call the frozen zoo for very rare animals or certain bloodlines. I'd hate to think George was the last of his kind....how very sad to think as humans we not only caused it but we can't stop it from happening with all the technology at our disposal.
