Snake Disability Studies

Okay,
So, as some of you know, my snakes are all adopted/rescued, and three out of four of them have disabilities. Kinky is completely deformed all along her spine, Mercedes has a nice big lump in her spine that will keep her from breeding, and Sev (who I guess isn't really mine ;) ) had a kinked tail and misaligned jaw.

I took in all three of these snakes to my disabilities studies course this past quarter because I wanted to bring out an awareness of animal disabilities, and, specifically, snake disabilities.

I've talked to my professor about it, and I'm going to present my personal studies on reptile disabilities at a Disabilities Studies Conference here in Ohio. Kinky and Mercedes are going to be in attendance (with multiple precautions taken, of course) as well as material that I have researched concerning disability social constructions.

Anyway, I just received my prof's letter of support, and I'm really excited. I'm hoping this'll open a few doors for me, and, hopefully, open people's eyes about snakes and the myths about them. Just wanted to share! Wish me luck! (And check out my final project for the class, www.herpawareness.com. It's pretty slim but it's on track, at least).

Lynne how wonderful! What a great project and to be asked to present it publically is a very big honor! I've always respected your need to help those creatures that aren't deemed "perfect" and this is yet another example. Wonderful! (oh your parents must be sooooooo proud!)

Great site Lynn! You are doing a wonderful thing for these little guys and girls.

My parents don't really understand the whole snake thing. My mom's pretty much terrified of them. So I have to explain it in terms they understand: "Mom, it's a good opportunity to meet people. It might give me a chance to open up new doors, new contacts. Plus it'll look good on my resume."


They like that :)

LOL Lynne I was thinking in mom mode actually so not so much about the snakes but rather "that's my girl up there talking in front of all these folks!" thing (it's a mom thang okay - oh and a dad thang too!)
