plans with snakes in future
So I thought it would be cool to see what everyone wants to do in the future or I guess even now. Well ill start mine first. I plan on geting onto the phoenix fire department and after my "probation" year (the time as a new fire fighter where its all work on field and in station" I will start a new program through the fire department where on my off days, if available, I would get all the snake removal calls. This would be so that there would be no need in tieing up and engine company and making a longer response time for them. And then I plan on collecting hots.
So hopfully this thread will go and I wont feel like an idiot for doing this

Aspiring hot keeper eh? Cool.
Lesse.. my snake plans. Well, I'm getting all the current scale kids into racks/boaphile cages. Everything is on order except for one rack which I'll get in a week or two.
In about a month I will pick up a 6' (or therabouts) male granite yellow anaconda as a breeder.
I'm looking to pair up my 'single' snakes, especially my hogg island boa.
This year I am breeding my female normal california kingsnake with my albino stripe cali king.
Next year I plan on breeding my dumerils boa pair, my cali kings again, my suriname red tail boa pair, and whatever else is paired up and ready by next year.
Someday after I move to Texas I want to start a reptile zoo with many species and morphs.

Re: plans with snakes in future
I think we're planning on a small, medium and large snake, once we get more experienced and have a little more room.
We have the medium - Cleo.
The small would be an orange cornsnake of some decription (Cass's favorite color is orange).
Finally if everything goes okay, we'd like a small male BCI for our large snake (7' max please!).
Well... those are the plans we are discussing in our nooooob-fueled snake excitement heh. But first we get experience, then we move on.

I hate waiting, but I know we need just to have time with Cleo and drawing knowledge and wisdom from you guys and as many other sources as we can get our hands on. I truly enjoy learning from you guys, as much as I say dumb stuff from time to time, hehe...=)

Re: plans with snakes in future
I have these crazy plans....
Since the majority of engineering firms work 4 days(10 hr. each) per week....I will probably have Fridays off once I hit the job field. So if that happens, I will either...
....volunteer at the local zoo on Fridays to get some large boid experience so I can get some experience and legally move on to the bigger snakes.
....setup a 'shop' and use those Fridays to get a bigger reptile business up and running.
....spend that free day out in the wood herping. I have this awesome goal of catching and photographing every reptile and amphibian in Louisiana.....then maybe writing a book.

Re: plans with snakes in future
I suppose I'll share my plans/aspirations/goals....
Within the next couple of months I'll be working on a herp room in the long run consisting of wall to wall rack systems. Hatchling racks, juvenile racks, adult racks....for BPs at all life stages. So hopefully by May we will have the framing and insulation done, walls painted, some sort of air circulation system up and running, adult and hatchling rack systems built, and heating dialed in to keep the room temp constant ~79-80F.
While I'm working on the herp room, I will also be completing FedEx cert process so I can start shipping.
This summer I will be working with a friend to create a website for ourselves to do a few herp sales, and hopefully create some local customers.
My focus later this year will be collecting more leos for my breeding projects (specifically my own sunglow project). Also, I would like to start a crested gecko collection.
Snake-wise this next year I'm looking into:
>04' or 05' Pastel Male
>~3 Normal Female BPs
Then I'll be working on fattening these up so I can produce 07' Pastels. My main goal of getting into morph breeding is to produce supers...they have to be one of my favorite morphs.
After working with pastels, I want to acquire a few simple recessives to play with...we'll decide that when the times comes.
Other than buying/building/and breeding projects, I look to travel to a few shows this year and meet some faces in the game and get some advice. Also, the possibility of picking up a few critters. :)
So far I plan to attend:
Wisconsin Reptile Breeders Show Monona, WI April 22nd
NARBC in Chicago October 7-8th
My goal is to keep it simple, and keep it overall fun. Herps have truly become my passion, so I'm gonna run with it while I'm still young and make the best of it. From that point if the online thing goes good for a while, I will be continuing school and start drawing up a business plan. And from there who knows where it will go.

Re: plans with snakes in future
Jason,
Sounds like you have a well thought out and sensible plan! ;)
Me? In a few weeks, I'll have four female '05 normals, and I would like to pick up 3 or 4 more this spring. I have purchased a 100% het hypo and a 100% het pied (both males) from Adam, and I plan to purchase a 100% het clown from Justin Kobylka (breeder here in GA who was WONDERFUL enough to teach me how to probe and pop this weekend and hold and admire his beautiful animals).
I'm up in the air (well, actually finances are a bit of a hinderance) but trying to decide on the fourth morph as either a female pastel, 100% het hypo female, or 100% het caramel albino male (at least as of today those are the three I'm considering).
My next major purchase will be a rack or two from Boaphile and the next couple of years will be spent raising these animals to healthy breeding weights. I may or may not pick up an additional female here or there along the way. Depends on if I see one advertised that I just MUST have! LOL
If I go with a pastel female, I would breed her to either Sullivan (the blushing male, formerly known as Kiah) in hopes he'd pass on some of his blushing to their offspring, or probably, the more sensible thing would be to breed her to Casper (the het hypo).
Once the current girls are all raised up - then I would keep all the female offspring and raise them all up to breeding weight to breed back to a het male for visual morphs in say - oh - five or six or seven years from now! LONG term goals! LOL

Re: plans with snakes in future
Oh Cass if you like that orangey color in a colubrid check out Beth's milksnake Emi (northerngirl05). They are hard to photography perfectly but you would not believe the color....almost appears unreal!
As Emi matures we are told her almost neon yellow bands will fade more into her broader white bands and her now tangerine orange bands could either stay the same orange, go a red/orange or quite strong red. She has the most freaky tangerine orange eyes too LOL. Only wierd thing is we can't tell when she's going into shed....she just suddenly is and sheds that day or the next....no "blue eyed" thing at all LOL. Super easy to care for her, pretty much just as you would a cornsnake.

Re: plans with snakes in future
Sounds like everyone has some great plans in the near future.
Good Luck with those!
Short term:
We're in the process of completing our Reptile room by converting the rest of our Melamine cages to Boaphile 421D's and 421T's, we've got 10 more 4X2's to go along with new lighting.
Our Boa plans:
We're hoping this year to produce a few boa litters consisting of Sunglows, Albinos, Dhets, Hets, Hypos, Hypo Pastels, Pastels, Hypo Hogs and Pure Hogs. Next year we hope to add a few more litters of Sunglows, Albinos, Hypo Pastel, Pastels Het Albinos, Salmons, and maybe some Ghosts and Aneries. We'd also like to add/work with Motley's and Snow Boas in the next 3-5yrs.
Our Ball Python plans:
We purchased a few female BP's a few weeks ago, so far so good! Our plans are to acquire a Piebald, Albino and 1-2 real nice Pastel males before year end. Hopefully we can reproduce a few Pastels for Supers along with Het Albinos & Het Piebalds. We plan on keeping most of the female offspring, but will sell/trade a few to buy/trade to inject new blood.
Long term goal:
It would be great if we could move our reptile room out of our home (limited space) into a breeding facility, once it is justified of course. At the moment we have about 450sqft of floor space for the reptile room and home office/spare reptile room. Something with 1000-1250sqft dedicated to our reptiles would be awesome!!

Re: plans with snakes in future
I plan on getting an anaconda, putting a leash on it, sticking it in the front yard and training it to eat any cats that poo in my garden, or any dogs that poo in the yard.
Then I'll offer my services to other neighborhoods.
I'm gonna be RICH!
