    Show Prices
This coming season I woud love to buy an adult female for Mufasa to breed this winter. I'm going to the show in Whiteplains NY in JUly. Do you think I will be able to get a 2006 season breedable female for under $200. I mean I know the show prices are awesome but I don't know about that in that ball market.

you might be able to find one. maybe one around 1000-1200 grams that you can get up to size by winter. be very careful with big girls that are priced low! if it seems to good to be true, it probably is. watch out for imports, poor feeders and males sold as females!

Sounds like I'm looking at the 200-300 range instead for a quality animal

    Just curious..

What do breeders do with worn out females?

How long do females bp's breed for before coming worn out?

Females don't actually "wear out" ... some are just not as "solid" when it comes to breeding as others .... I call them "worn out" when they get like that ... They will lock up with males all season long and just not produce eggs ... some years they'll throw you a clutch ... and then take another couple of years off ... a lot of less than reputable breeders that lack the patience to develop the animal will move them out and commonly tell you "she's a great breeder, i just need to make some room". Mostly, the idiots just don't know what they're doing.

Anytime I see a "breeder" selling an adult female on the open market I have to ask questions ... Adult females are GOLD ... and even if the story about needing room or needing money is true, EVERYONE that breeds knows someone else that breeds ... If I needed cash and had to sell adult females to get it, all I would have to do is pick up the phone and make some calls ... she would be sold in half a day ... if a guy lugs an adult female to a show or puts an ad up on the internet selling an adult female, I have to wonder if it's because he doesn't want to pass his problems onto someone that he knows or better yet, knows where he lives. ;)

    Just my $.02.

Interesting point Adam and thanks for enlightening folks like myself on the issue. It just doesn't pay to be a trusting person now a days.

    Trust should never be automatic.

The good news is that there are a large number of established breeders with excellent reputations out there ... there's really no need to take "risks" unless you're trying to get a bargin basement "deal" ... and as the old saying goes ... "You usually get what you pay for".

Personally, I don't mind spending a little more to know that I'm getting a reliable product from a person that will support me after the sale ... it's worked well for me so far. :D

Oh, and don't forget ... always check references!

That is something I probably would not have thought of doing when I do get in the market for another snake. I will have to remember that. Hopefully in a couple of years I will be able to expand. The dreams of a breeding program have been flowing through my head as of late. I know that trust should never be automatic, but I have a bad habit of doing jsut that sometimes. You would think I would have learned by now, but I am hard headed. LOL Thanks again Adam
