    Measuring snakes
I thought I'd try to measure my snakes today only to find that using a ruler doesn't really work very well.

Are there any suggestions on how to do this more easily?

As a matter of fact there is! :)

Located right here on the site is a great tool that you can download called Snake Measurer software. Here's the link: http://www.ball-pythons.net/modules....viewfile&id=28

With that program make sure you get a direct overhead shot of the snake. Personally I do three pics and use the average then back it up with the old fashioned string method (run a string down the snake's spine following it's coils, then measure the string not the snake LOL).

I just have to say that the program rocks.

What other tools do you folks use that I'm missing out on?

At the moment we have an easy life measurnig Cleo, she likes to stretch out along the front of the viv of an evening when she is out and about, so we measure her then.

Of course she is only 21" long, and the viv is 30" long, so I don't know how much longer this tactic will work!

I have this software called Free Herp. It logs every herp you own, their eating habits, their pics, their enclosures, their temps, any health problems they may have. It is awesome. You can get it from download.com Just search for Free Herp.

That's a great looking program, Kelly! Easy to find, (just skip past the links for herpes related stuff! LOL!), easy to download, and easy to install. It looks really cool. Thanks for pointing that out!

At this point anyways with our small collection I couldn't live with my Degei program. It keeps track of feeding, refusals, meds given, observations, defecations, urates, etc. You can download the trial version from www.degei.com At some point you're likely to want the full version as it includes things like breeding and clutch data.

Very easy program to use without a lot of bells and whistles most folks with only a few snakes don't really need anyways.
