I've used them in a pinch ... I think it varies from store to store ...

So here's a funny story .... Imagine the looks you get when you walk into PetCo it goes something like this ...

Young innocent PetCo employee - "Can I help you?"

Me - "Yes, I need some feeder rats and mice"

    Employee - "Sure, how many?"

Me - "All of them ... and everything that you have in the back"

Bleh! I don't like petco much, with the exception of one store in our area. I was checking out hamsters, since ours went to hamster heaven. (My daughter was SO sad about it I was looking to maybe replace her, but was trying to find a nice one) I pulled out 4 hamsters with open sores. Yuck! Having sad all that, I would advise looking at them. Is the cage clean? Is there enough food? If yes, then it would probably be ok. Not the best solution, but will work in a pinch.

Poor little employee must have went screaming for his manager. Maybe they thought you were in some mouse/rat sacrificing cult. LOL! That's too funny!

I happen to be a fan of both Petco and Petsmart, the ones I've been to have always been very clean and their animals all look healthy; sadly this is a major contrast to all of the local pet shops I've been to in both my hometown and where I go to school. I buy all my frozen feeders at one or the other, depending on where I am; they're also the only places around the seem to sell the frozen. However, it sounds like it really varies from place to place ::shrug::

OMFG....NOT here!!! The ones here are sooooooooooo bloody expensive that I'd just as soon drive the extra 30 min to the mom-and-pop store to buy something there. AAAAACK!

the one here in austin is the strangest store ever. they seem to take awesome care of all the small mammals, but rather poor care of all the herps. mostly because of the girl that works in the mammal section i think she just goes above and beyond the petco call of duty. ill have to agree with adam that you just never know with petco until you walk into the store.

i used to work at petco.........for six years ....and i agree with you all, as i am not biased in Petco's favor in any way. I do believe, however, that it differs from store to store. You could have one store be awesome, and the next store be crap. For the most part, it depends on the people that are in the departments, as from my experience, i have yet to see a manager that knows anything much about the animals in the store, ESPECIALLY with the herps. I worked with one guy for about two years who was in charge of the herps who didn't know crap, but acted like he did, always challenging my advice. He also apparently owned NO herps. After he was fired, another guy who already worked there as a stock guy, no less, took his place, and became the best i had ever seen. One thing though, is that i think their feeders are a bit expensive. The local Petco sells mice for $1.99! When you need larger quantities, it is best to take the 30 min drive to your local store, as the one closest to us sells them for a $1.00.

Wow - not too bad. How bout rat prices?

Our local resource has med rats going for $5 or $6 a pop - then again their markup across the board is insane.
