salt water conversion

well, we've decided to convert our 90 gallon tank to a salt water set up instead of our cichlid set up. so we will be moving the fish around next weekend... taking down two tanks in the process and switching them around so the new salt water will be in the living room and the 77 gallon cichlid/oscar tank will be in the kitchen/office area.

i'm excited but... NOT... since i'm the one who has to do all the work LOL

well i lived thru the changes. i had to take the two tanks all the way down and take down our 46 gallon half way... but... it's all done now and looks great. once i sell the cichlids in the 90 gallon we'll be adding the live rock...

i can see the salt water tank taking shape now!

I hope you start to enjoy the world of Saltwater as much as I have. I love herps, but I had saltwater running through my veins way before my leap into my herps.

A 90 is a great size tank to do salt. What do you plan on keeping it as...full reef/fish-only/ or FOWLR (Fish Only With Liverock) PM me if you want a really nice Reef Community forum to join.

we are planning on eventually upgrading our lighting to accomadate corals etc.

we are creating the tank around a lionfish... as that is our favorite fish... we still need to do a lot of research so joining a salt water forum would be great... but it has to be as helpful and friendly as this one or i won't bother. i'm very very picky as to what forums i visit :)

well the conversion is complete. "there is salt in that there tank!!!"

i could use some suggestions though on how to cut down on the "white noise" the pump makes...

it's an a.d. smith 1/4 horse power pump made by dart. with pvc piping and flex plastic tubing set up in a flow return. doesn't fit under the tank so it's behind it.

we got some nice lighting... coral life 250 watt system with moonlights, hg metal halides and blue actinics as well. we have a timer to have them go off to simulate nature.

our salt is measuring 1.025 this morning which i'm very pleased about.

I also love saltwater aquaria but I didn't have alot off time to spend on it anymore. I raised two lionfish too full size, being it was my my favorite fish.I had every single fish you could think of in a 5 year period. I started off fish only then reef tank ,fell in love with it then the time issue came along .Start off with soft coral's then work your way up,I started with mushrooms then I got to have a purple maxima clam.Hopefully in the near future I can set up a leopard shark tank.

Totally cool! I've always wondered how hard it would be to run a saltwater tank, but I've never taken the time to look into it. I have an antique 29 gallon tank (chrome frame) that I've been meaning to re-seal and set up once I get my life in order, is it possible to run a salt water tank that small?

you CAN run a small salt water tank... but it's not always very successful. we have a 12 gallon tank which runs... but unfortunately without the proper lighting... it isn't doing great :(

it's quite simple to run a salt water tank with all the advancements in technology with them... if you get good equipment that is. it just takes more time if you have critters in it you have to hand feed etc... but it can be simple to run one if you keep to easy to keep stuff... like mushrooms, tube worms etc.
