    Feeding Time
So my ball python comes out every night after 10ish if all the lights are off or if the room is pretty dark. When he comes out he loves to press up against the front glass. Should I feed him while he’s still in his hide but awake, or should I wait until he’s already out and not pushing up against the glass, open the enclosure and wait for him to come from wherever he is in the enclosure? Or does it not really matter, it just needs to be at night time? I will be attempting my first feeding on my new ball python tomorrow night.

Mid-evening tends to work best for me, like 7pm or so this time of year.

I usually feed my snakes late at night and I don’t care where they are in their enclosures when I feed them. Just be careful with front opening enclosures because sometimes they’ll launch themselves out of the enclosure and you’ll have to shove them back in. Sometimes they’re perched, sometimes they’re circling the enclosure floor, and other times they’ll just poke their heads out of their hides and snatch the food. Best wishes with your first critter feeding attempt!

Ok thanks! Yes, my little noodle is definitely an explorer and would definitely try to launch himself out. He’ll be out looking for food at night, so I’ll probably wait until he’s not right up at the glass, then open op the enclosure and offer him. Can’t wait, I’m excited, never witnessed a feeding IRL.

My ball python only tends to eat when lights are out... which in my case is 10pm-12 noon the next morning. She'll eat at night or in the morning, as long as lights out. Some others have no issues regardless of time or lights or any other variables. You should try throughout various different times. It would definitely be more convenient if she eats at any setting. My other two (non-balls) will eat any time any setting.

Charles makes an excellent point. I usually feed my snakes late at night but that’s because I’m a night owl. I’ve also fed them at different times of day and they still eat. I agree with switching it up if your snake cooperates.

I agree with everyone suggesting you try experimenting a bit, if only so you wind up being unexpectedly inconvenienced later. My girl will only eat when it just starts getting dark, between around 8-10 p.m. where I'm at. Any earlier or too much later and she usually won't act interested, and she seems to have the best feeding response when she's just starting to poke her head out of her hide at night. It'll be much more convenient for you if your snake cooperates more than mine does!

I feed mine anytime after 6pm but I don't think he particularly cares in general when the rat appears, he's always ready for it. :snake:

Ok thanks for all of the responses! Wow [emoji2956]! I will offer around 10 tonight once I turn the lights off, when I’m offering I’ll just dim the so I can see. I’ll probably offer around this time for the first couple times, then I’ll experiment. I want to guarantee he eats for his first couple meals. Thanks for the tips, I’ll keep you guys posted if he eats!
