    Understanding temp fluctuations
    Hi everyone,

New owner, I had my tank with everything reading properly with all the temps on the hot and cool side. However now, I am noticing that when my snake is on the hot side, the thermometer I use reads 85F, it was 90 up until now. Would this be more so with the equipment malfunctioning and not heating right, or would this be that because my snake is on top of the hot area its accounting for body heat plus the heat mat heating up? I have the mat under the glass, probe in between the mat and the glass. I'm just worried that today of all days when my snake is finally here the thermostat or mat are not working as intended.

Isn't a BP hot range 88-94F an cool side 80-84F? 90F is fine I think, I'll check. I have too many tanks an have to recheck what is for what snake/turtle/bird/fish/horse/kid...

If the temp doesn't come back up in an hour, put a light (100W) on the cage till you fix the temp problem or get another heat source.

You really need to be taking ground temps with an IR temp gun. There is usually a discrepancy between what the thermostat probe reads and the actual temps at the glass/tank bottom.

What kind of thermometer are you using? Are you using an IR temp gun?
