Red tail boa cross with high island questions I'd like comments on from everybody
Hey everyone. A friend of mine who's had a hoggy and a redtail( not sure if true red or not) for many years was good that they were both females and had them co hab together for a few years. As you would guess, one turned out to be male and in June he found crossed babies in the enclosure, about 12 that lived. He found homes for all but 5 that I have now. He didn't want to sell or rehome them until they would eat properly and he didn't have a good food source nearby so he let me rescue them as I have the means. Sorry for the late intro, but how do the Gene's work in this situation. Most people would like to keep hoggys pure but were past that point now. I'm just curious if the Gene's act co dom and if theres a chance to breed them back to get a pure hog island and if so , would it be het for red tail or not? Same thing vice versa with the reds. Or are they forever going to be nothing but a red hoggy? I'm going to rehome these to forever homes once I establish them, but I may keep 1 for myself. Any comments would be welcome

Once a pure locality/species is mixed with anything else there is no possibility of getting pure animals from the offspring. They are forever hybrids.

Neither the red tail or the hog is a pattern mutation, it's a locality. So none of the animals will ever be pure again no matter how many times you breed them back. Think of it like humans, if a Brazilian man and a Korean woman have a son, no matter how many generations of Korean (or Brazilian) babies they have the babies will still have some Korean (or Brazilian!) blood. We don't consider humans "hybrids" but with animals most people like to keep localities (bloodlines) pure. You might be able to re-home the hybrid babies but there's not a huge market for them so it might be difficult.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!
