Hanging Temp Probe - bad idea?

I'm setting up my AP and they've pre-drilled a hole for the temp probe in the roof above the shelf. I've seen at least one thread where others have secured the probe to a wall using screwed in c-clamps, but does anyone leave their probe hanging? Is this a bad idea? Does it absolutely need to be secured to a wall? I know I shouldn't use tape inside the cage, but I could secure the wire outside of the enclosure.

Did you have an RHP installed by AP? Is there a channel in the top of the cage as well? If so, that hole is probably to feed the power cord out of the cage.

No reason the probe can’t dangle. On my T8 cages i have the probe dangling directly behind the panel about 1/2 way down the height of the cage.

I’d play around with different placements for the probe until you get your desired temps and then secure the probe if it’s against a wall when you settle on placement. I’m doing the same right now with a couple cages that I’ve made some mods to.

What’s most important is that the animal cannot disrupt the placement of the probe, lay on it, pee on it, spill water, etc.

I simply attach the probe to the back wall of the viv using a hot glue gun .

+1 for hot glue.

You dont want to leave it hanging. Your snake will move it around and it could get caught on something, get out of position, etc. Speaking from experience on that.

I have mine hanging about 2 inches above the floor but I do have it secured on the outside in the back. BP can probably swing it but it still stays put. Never had any issues in 6+ years.

Mine is secured to the wire mesh on top with twist ties that are poked under and through and then twisted on top. The wire for the probe is tied very snug against the top of the cage and the end of it (the probe head) dangles right under my heat source. Still good to check ambient temp with a second thermometer and surfaces with the heat gun though.
