Corn snake is being weard..... thoughts?
So our corn snake that laid 27 eggs for us earlier this year started last week laying 5 duds over 4 days time. Took her to the vet and the vet said she was not egg bound and that she is just trying to provide us with more eggs. All the new eggs are not fertile. She is 11 years old and very healthy and good body mass and shape. Was told by my vet to just keep her egg laying box present for her to lay more if she wants. She did an Ultra Sound and it showed more developing eggs in random stages of development. Was told to keep an eye on her and if change in behavior bring her back in. My vet has over 20 years experience with herps of all kinds.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I have no experience so this is just a random shot in the dark, but I know that many colubrids can have multiple clutches in a season so maybe that's what it is and the eggs are just developing weird.

Thank you both. I knew she could double clutch but this is going so random. She seams healthy and the vet said she was ok. She is just over 6 feet and very healthy. For a corn I think that is rather long and she eats really well. I do limit her in prey size but right now letting her eat weekly to help her stay healthy. I have a market for all the babies if they hatch out so not worried there. She is a rather amazing animal to work with. Love her.

It's not unusual for the second clutch to be a lot smaller or infertile, depends on the female and the male whether or not he was re-introduced at the right time (if re-introduced) or whether or not the retain sperm was good enough to do the job.
Also not unusual for an older female is to triple clutch.

Corn snakes can be quite prolific. I've not seen 3rd clutches but certainly have seen automatic 2nd clutches, not to mention continued fertile egg production for up
to FIVE full years after mating only ONE year...there is no "off switch". Careful what you wish for. :snake::snake::snake::snake::snake::snake::snake::snake::snake::snake::snake::sn ake::snake:

22 eggs found this morning. Going to let her sit on them till I get home tonight. She looks exhausted but not to exhausted to fight you if you mess with her or her eggs.
27 eggs fallowed by 22 more? WOW. Blows my mind. The first clutch has not hatched yet. Keep waiting and hoping. Hope she is done for the next 2 years for her sake. Poor girl. She deserves some rest.

Poor snake indeed! She deserves rest, but first, hydration...rest...& lots of food. ;) Take that girl out to DINNER, lol. Hope she quits now too, but don't count on it. :snake:

I moved her water closer to the opening of her nesting box. I did see her drink right before I walked out the door. I guess after waiting 11 years to see her first boy, she was so ready to explode.
