Another Hurricane Season Starts

If you don't have a disaster/evacuation plan for yourself and your critters, and you live along the Gulf coast, you're overdue to make one.

Agree. I have lived in Florida all my life. Never had to go through anything real serious at all up until 2004. That year we had two hurricanes come through where I am at in a 3 week period. I thought I was prepared but I was wrong. Lost power for 8 days on the first one and 4 on the second. Since then I have gone through 4 more. Luckily I have not had to experience a cat 3 or higher, but you never know. One of the best investments I ever made was a generator setup. If the time ever did come where I was told to evacuate, I do have a breeder buddy up in southern Georgia where we can take our snakes, dogs and ourselves to ride it out. I think it was Benjamin Franklin who said "By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail."

East Coasters: make sure you have an evacuation plan as well. Not just for hurricanes, but for nor'easters, powerful summer storms, and the flooding that comes with them, too.

For everybody: if a tropical storm/nor'easter is coming your way and there is any type of call to evacuate, GET OUT. Local emergency coordinators I've spoken to have emphasized that the multi-day utility outages are what really get non-evacuees into trouble. Even if your house survives relatively unscathed, a week without power, water, and gas will put you in a rough place. You also won't be able to restock on food or get what you need for repairs since grocery and hardware stores will likely be closed. On top of that, first responders will likely be overtaxed, so help may not come as quickly as you need it if you run into real trouble. So seriously: if a big storm is coming your way, GET. OUT.

One of my summer projects this year is to make "evacuation quarters" for my snakes. In other words, get the things I need for some appropriately-sized tub setups that I could easily transport and run at my evacuation point. Hopefully I'll never need to use them, but it pays to be prepared.

Sounds like a good plan to have. Personally, I don't have to deal with big storms, but we do get quite a few earth quakes and wild fires where I live, so I have evacuation bins for all my animals.

Everyone stay safe and be smart. It's probably going to be a busy storm year ;)

I was in bootcamp when Charlie and the other one hit, but I was just as terrified because my family is all here in Orlando. Everyone was safe luckily but now as a homeowner myself, I have since experienced a Cat 3 when hit us two years ago, didn’t loose power BUT we did loose our roof and fence door. It scared the living crap out of me and since then my husband and I have been making plans for prep, started stocking up on water along with other misc supplies for the 18 different species of animals we have here at our Poinciana Zoo lol. Be smart and be safe everyone!
