Can he eat it BUTT FIRST?

So......... My guy is really confused! He's trying to eat and he's having a hell of a time. He struck and got the rat quickly and he has drug it all over the place. In the water dish, out of the he water dish, back in and out 3 times and he has been steady trying to eat I BUTT first. This is not in the rule book! [emoji15] Will he ever find the head or will his not so bright self keep going at it from the wrong end?!

If it’s an appropriate sized meal, he will figure it out and it’s okay if he eats it the “wrong” way.

He FINALLY found the head and now he's got it back in his water bowl eating it. He'll definitely be hydrated. Opinions about removing the water bowl next feeding and putting it back once he's done?

It also looks like he's eating some New England Sphagnum moss along with it. Any input? Sorry for being a worry wart. I just need to know when and if to intervene and also if the moss is going to make him regurgitate. [emoji849]

Not unusual for young animals to eat backward or sideways 🙄.

Keys are

Time
Proper size prey
If fed F/T concentrate the heat with a hair dryer on the head.

If is best that you snake does not make an habit of eating substrate however if it happen once in a while in small quantities you will be fine, keep in mind they digest bones, fur, nails.

Thank you! I went ahead and took the water dish and cleaned it and put fresh water in there. I used to feed in a seperate container so the substrate part freaks me out a little. The Prey is a good size but I didn't heat the head with a hairdryer. I'll do that next time for sure. [emoji106]
