Diego the Tortoise May Have Saved His Entire Species

A Galapagos giant tortoise named Diego is credited with saving his species from extinction. After more than 40 years of captive breeding, Diego helped boost the tortoise’s population from 15 to more than 2,000.

Oh sure, thanks Diego.

Somehow those articles about the Espanola tortoises rarely mention the twelve females that spent 40 years laying 2,000 tennis ball size eggs. Or the other two males in the program.

They are such cool animals. Part of the reason the program is working is eradicating invasive species and cultivating their favorite cactus.

Yeah, we know who had the really hard job. ;) Sexism even in the animal world. Just like men are 'chefs', but women are just unpaid housekeeper/cooks. :rolleyes:
