**URGENT** broken rhp left the viv smelling smoky. (No fire)
Everything was working this morning the rhp, stat & lights and when I checked on him a couple of hours ago the rhp had stopped working and the viv smelt smokey (not on fire) there wasn’t any smoke but still the smell was there. I have took him out of it and put him in a RUB but I’d been out since this morning probably around ten hours. Would something have happened to him from inhaling the fumes?
I’ll be putting him in boarding till I can sort it out.

I'm glad there was no fire. Hopefully your snake is fine from the fumes. What brand of RHP and thermostat were you using? Was there a power surge?

No power surge. Use habistat both rhp & Pulse proportional stat. The only thing I can of is that’s just simply broken. Been used for over a year so it was probably inevitable at some point.

Sounds like it shorted out or something...:O Only time will tell about your snake, probably OK, but fumes are never "good" either for us or animals. It might be very
hard to tell with a snake, mostly & wait & see & watch his behavior. SO glad there was no fire!

What’s the sort of thing to look for in terms of behaviour as a result of inhaling fumes that I should look out for?
I’ll be taking him the vets anyway.

Very hard to say...anything from loss of appetite to neurological or lung damage? Snakes are stoic anyway & not always eating this time of year, but pay attention to any
breathing trouble or anything out of the ordinary. Hopefully & probably all OK.

Think positive. Any idea how long your snake was breathing the nasty smoke? Also depends how thick it was. Risk increases as the
exposure increases, either longer time or higher concentration. But snakes pretty much only have one functional lung too, which is why
I really hate to see owners smoke around their snakes too.

When electronics malfunction like this, it's pretty much going to be melted-burning plastic that makes the fumes, since metal components
don't burn. Burning plastic is very toxic, but let's hope the exposure was minimal.

(This is a downside of cages with so little ventilation, to promote humidity.)

I was out for about 10 hours, or 11 not sure.
