Nicaraguan Boa

A guy on D.T. goes by the name MRHoggnose asked me if i would like to buy this kind of snake but i don't know what they are like or even heard of them. Can anyone help me out on a caresheet or pros and nons of this snake? also how long do i need to keep a new reptile seperate from the others? Thanks Aaron also im wanting a RTB but i don't want to feed rabbits down the road or have to have a 6ft. cage THanks Aaron

A Nic is a locality RTB... most of your "typical RTBs" come from Columbia or thereabouts. Nic boas come from that country. They are typically smaller, and darker colored. Some would say they have more attitude, but I also know people who have had total sweethearts.


As for their care, it's probably close to an RTB, but localities are usually more stringent on their requirements... meaning you have to have things perfect or there's a great risk of them getting sick. You could probably do a google search on Nic Boa Care and find a few caresheets.

well mark that out on the list then i think im going to just stick with getting a couple of cresties and by luck breeding a female with my male. I really want a sweet looking snake but no having to worry about a real big cage. Im thinking about corns but they are so kid kinda snake but they are so many phases and colors. I would like to breed corns but that is alot of mouths to worry about and feed lol . Im at a loss right now. I just love the colors of a RTB and would like to keep a larger snake than my BP. Any suggestions

Why dont you just go with a male RTB or a Hogg Island boa. If you want something smaller, kingsnakes look pretty cool, theres not as many morphs as corns, but enough to choose from.

I would but i have a limited place to put all the cages wife and I live in an two bedroom apartment. Hogs cost so much and hard to find true hogs, And i don't want to high cost of food bill for the RTB

Just to give you an idea of costs for a male Columbian if that helps any.

Big Iris tubs at WalMart right now (see Becky's thread about this) are running about $20.00 and are a great size for a male adult. A small baby would of course fit nicely in a much smaller (and even cheaper) Sterlite or Rubbermaid. Add in a couple of cheap hides, some substrate, a water dish and whatever heating method you personally prefer to those start up costs.

Rauri is a 6 foot male columbian. He eats twice monthly and will either consume two jumbo rats or one very young meat bunny. Depending on which way we go, it generally costs a bit under $10.00 every two weeks or $20.00 per month to feed him. That's about the same as a dog basically isn't it? Of course a baby columbian would be different but just to give you an idea.

From what we've read and seen with Rauri, columbians are not picky eaters and Rauri will happily snarf down rats or bunnies with equal zeal! We do have a local meat rabbit breeder though. Bunnies at the pet store are way over priced! I know some folks are kind of wierded out with feeding "cute" baby bunnies but remember these are meat rabbits and never meant for pets nor handled that way by the people that breed them.

Columbians do get big though especially the females. At six feet Rauri is a big, very strong snake but incredibly easy natured considering his past poor care.

Dumeril Boas are good snakes and easy to care for...a bit pricey, but they don't get as big as a RTB. They usually average about six feet and are really good natured. Here is a pic of one of mine...

I wouldn't say dumerils are pricey.. $100 for a baby is easy to find.

They get over 6' let me tell you! Mine is 7' 4", I've seen plenty over 7' (males too) and even up to 8'+!

Awesome animals though.

are they are good second snake then? I want either a redtail or as close as i can get.
