Scoping or stargazing ?

I caught my snake staring at his background one day like he's never seen it before, spent like 5-10 minutes just staring, sometimes moving his head slightly to admire the whole background. It's one of those nature backgrounds for aquariums. It was just so cute when he did that. :)

Not stargazing...just being a snake!

I've caught my single ball python doing some of the craziest things that even sometimes cause me to rush over in panic only to find she is just not using her brain...assuming she has one. :P
I have caught her twice in my year of having her arch her head and neck back upside down and running her head and neck along the top of the cage only to flip back around when she can't reach any farther. It's not corkscrewing or just reaching pencil straight into the sky but it is very weird. Is this some form of stargazing or just her being weird and crazy?:rolleye2:

unfortunatly I don't have a video and I don't know how to attach a sketch but hopefully you get the right idea...I'll continue to figure out how to attach a sketch.

Snakes do have a brain, but that doesn't mean it's just like ours. Of course, I can't speak for every human either...:D

If I'm reading your description correctly, she's just exploring the "ceiling" of her cage, & isn't averse to bending over backwards now & then. I wouldn't worry about it- if you were confined to a small room, you might get just as creative. When to worry is if your snake seems dizzy, unable to right themselves if gently put on their backs, uncoordinated when grabbing prey, & truly staring upwards for a very long time ("stargazing"). Most of the time, snake-keepers hear about this symptom & worry needlessly by reading too much into their snake's temporary activity- I hope that helps.

Ok thanks so much! Even though she is the only snake in our house and never comes into contact with other snakes, I tend to get worried over the idea of IBD. She and my crested gecko are my everything and I wouldn't trade them for the world.
After reading another post about this same situation the comments were the same as what you just said so thank you! Like I said she does some of the craziest things that make me smile :D

Sure...I was going to mention that it's usually better to start a new post than add on to an old one. BTW, :welcome:

As you get more familiar with our forum, it's a lot easier to find your way around.
Upper left below our forum name/logo are some choices- pretty self-explanatory. "What's New?" & "Home" are the latest topics being discussed. Next to that, click on "Forum" & you'll get a long menu of options. Pay attention to the subheadings (such as "ball pythons" if your question pertains to a BP). You could have chosen "General BPs" or "BP Husbandry", & when you click on that, you'll see at the upper left a blue button "+ Post New Thread"- hit that, fill in what you want to post, & then "submit reply". You'll find your post at the top of the Home list of topics, & it will move down the list as other posts follow yours. Okay? Try to put your new posts in the most relevant subject area -get familiar with the Forum page, we talk about WAY more than BPs here ;) but if you guess wrong, I or another mod can move it where it belongs- we'd just rather not do that all the time, lol.
