Is this normal?

My year old Spider Ball Python likes to let his hut sit on top of him and I can't figure out why. It's definitely not too small. Is this just him being finicky or is something wrong? Advice please.

You need to use a third party picture hosting system or your BP.net gallery if you want to post a picture, you cannot link a picture that is on a storage drive.

As far as being picky it is possible that your BP

Feels comfortable being exposed.

The hide does not provide enough security.

Or the hide is too hot inside if on the hot side.

Many snakes feel safer with "back pressure"- feeling snug equals safety, in their world. If his hide is plenty big, you can make it more snug (so he doesn't
have to do this) by stuffing one or more paper towels inside to make it feel smaller while he grows.

My little Crowley does this from time to time, I just figured he lifted the hide because it's very light, so when he moves around sometimes he lifts it and some of the snake comes out. He'll sleep like that just fine, probably thinks he's still hiding. He never used that hide till I put a little dog bed in it so he feels more secure. Here is Crowley doing the same thing.

@Valyndris thank you! I figured he's fine because he acts like he doesn't even know. That makes me feel better that it's not only mine.

No, it's not only your snake, lol...snakes do silly things, that's part of why we love them. ;)

Booplesnoop does this too! I always tell her her butt is sticking out and she just looks at me like "ya, so?"

I've had this too. I did fix it one time by simply making the hide heavier with a small lime sized river rock hot glued to the top. The added weight stopped it from lifting as easily and no more snake hanging out, lol. Haven't needed it for a while since the hide got outgrown and the bigger one is heavy enough or big enough still.

Not necessarily worth bothering with, but plastic hides can just be too light for them to press against without it popping up.
