Retic in the same rack.

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to pick up a retic at a show in 10 days, I have some available slots in my ball python racks - after a quarantine period - what are my risks housing them in the same rack?

Is there anything that might go undetected and harm my collection?

I have 34 ball pythons in one room so if something had to spread throughout my collection it would be heart breaking.

Unfortunately I only have 1 usable room for all my snakes, so permanently housing the retic in a different room is not an option.

As long as you follow proper quarantine (3 months minimum, longer if possible) then you should be fine to introduce them to the main snake room.

There’s nothing specific to Retics that would affect your BP collection. You just have to worry about all the usual stuff like nido, mites, etc. Same as you would if you brought in a new BP.

Bear in mind that in 90 days that retic may not fit in a rack for ball pythons.

The only issue is they grow FAST. Might be too big for the rack by the time quarantine is up.

I think this has not been thought through all the way. OP, how long have you been keeping snakes?

I just read some of the your past threads. I highly advise a little more experience before you think about buying a retic. At adult sizes it will require more than one person to handle it. Some have attitude problems. The availability of food has to be considered. Legality of keeping one wherever you live needs to be considered. Protecting the safety of yourself and others is a prime concern. A loose retic is not good press for the hobby.

Thank you for the responses I really appreciate the effort!

Small amount of background info - I will be getting a SD Retic (I have already considered the size requirements), and also have 3 different rack sizes and an area to build a proper enclosure once the retic has reached adult size.

I have also made plans to work with retics on a regular basis through another hobbyist.

My main concern was if the retic would have any dangerous "common" diseases like Boa's are often known for.

I would never do anything to expose myself or family to harm, I have done a ton of research before hand, and have specifically sought out a SD with locality data to avoid having a mainland on my hands.
